Does Cherenkov radiation, neutrino interaction and proton decay make you HOT & BOTHERED?

August 8th, 2007 by Richard

ph14-bottom-yoko-2.JPG

Super-K is located 1,000 m underground in the Mozumi Mine (Kamioka Mining and Smelting Co.) in Hida city (formerly Kamioka town), Gifu, Japan. It consists of 50,000 tons of pure water surrounded by about 11,200 photomultiplier tubes. The cylindrical structure is 41.4 m tall and 39.3 m across. A neutrino interaction with the electrons or nuclei of water can produce a particle that moves faster than the speed of light in water (although of course slower than the speed of light in vacuum). This creates a cone of light known as Cherenkov radiation, which is the optical equivalent to a sonic boom. The distinct pattern of this flash provides information on the direction and flavor of the incoming neutrino. The difference in time between the top of the cone reaching the detector wall and the bottom can be used to calculate the direction that the particle came from; the bigger the difference, the greater the angle from the horizontal of the particle’s path. From the sharpness of the edge of the cone the type of particle can be inferred. The multiple scattering of electrons is large, so electromagnetic showers produce fuzzy cones. Highly relativistic muons, in contrast, travel almost straight through the detector and produce rings with sharp edges. Read the rest of this entry »

Lick The Sun (beautiful body modification)

August 7th, 2007 by Richard

Sydney-based digital artist Brian Walker creates scenes that meld illustration and fashion with an element of surprise. Stemming from a passion for illustration to depict his ideas and concepts of surrealist landscapes and characters, Walker first began using photography as a tool to represent ideas of the impossible within the believable context of photography. Walker’s works feature compositions such as battery packed human figurines, fur clad models destined for the meat market and a post modern take on the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill. Corrugated Sound Box Room Thing

August 7th, 2007 by Thread Jacker Extraordinaire

Image

Ikea pack furniture in it. Gehry has made furniture from it. Now architects are shaping spaces with it. Is there any limit to the creative re-use of corrugated cardboard? With its unique physical consistency, its decidedly axial strength, and its deadening acoustic absorption, corrugated cardboard has many inherent qualities. As such it was the perfect material for this particular sound installation:

Wonder Woman House

The Camouflage House

Image

Camouflage, or cryptic coloration, is something living organisms have developed over millions of years in order to remain indiscernible from the surrounding environment.

Buildings, something humans have designed and built for thousands of years, have never been indiscernible from the surrounding environment. If anything, our egotistical fascination with conquering nature has meant our buildings are designed to triumph over its surroundings.  Of course, nature inspires building design. But it rarely seeks to mimic it. Read the rest of this entry »

Cool School Design

August 3rd, 2007 by Thread Jacker Extraordinaire

 schools2-copy.jpg

We don’t know about you, but school wasn’t exactly the most inspiring of places. Concrete bunkers for buildings, concrete tennis courts for ‘recreation’ and food that tasted, well, like concrete. Yes, school did sound like a brutalist architects dream. But, Reynar Banham was nowhere to be seen.

This is much the same story for most schools under the comprehensive banner. Kids are taught in buildings resembling cell blocks. The only exceptions coming from the private institutions Britain is famed for. Education it seems, is taught from books not experienced by what surrounds you. Read the rest of this entry »

Building Demolished from the Ground Up Looks Better than New

August 3rd, 2007 by Thread Jacker Extraordinaire

demolishing-building.jpg

A 15-story office block in the heart of London is being demolished backwards in order to build a skyscraper in its place. Demolishers are working up from the ground level upwards, dismantling each floor to reveal the concrete core of the P&O building. Find out why, and the new skyscraper replacing it. Clever UrbanTypography

August 2nd, 2007 by Thread Jacker Extraordinaire

urban_type.jpg

Some great photographs of buildings that create the illusion of typography. Type the Sky by Lisa Rienermann is an alphabet formed of shapes buildings make against the sky when photographed from below. Now i hope that someone comes up with an application where you can create your name with it.
